The South Indian system for matching two birth charts before marriage, used by Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayali families. Ten checks are each judged present or absent, rather than scored in points the way the North Indian 36-guna Ashtakoota is.
Most families look for at least five or six of the ten, and treat Rajju as essential whatever the count. A pairing with eight poruthams but Rajju dosha usually goes to an astrologer rather than being accepted.
The 27 nakshatras are divided into five rajjus, read as the limbs of one body. When both people fall in the same rajju the porutham is absent, and that is the single result most South Indian families will not set aside. Traditional exemptions exist and depend on the full charts.
Dina and Stree Deergha are counted from the bride’s star to the groom’s, so reversing the two changes the result. Guna Milan is symmetric and does not have this property, which is one of the real differences between the two systems.
