How is nakshatra compatibility scored?
Guna Milan awards points across eight kootas that add up to 36: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Four read the birth star directly and four read the moon sign. Eighteen or more is the line most families use; twenty-eight and above is read as excellent.
What is nadi dosha?
Nadi is the eight-point koota traditionally tied to health and progeny. When both partners fall in the same nadi it scores zero, which is called nadi dosha. It is the koota families weight most heavily, and classical texts list exemptions — same rashi with different stars, for example — that an astrologer applies from the full charts.
Can two people with the same nakshatra marry?
Yes. A same-star pair scores full points on Gana and Yoni and zero on Nadi and Tara in this calculator, which usually lands in the middle band. Many classical sources exempt same-star couples from nadi dosha when their padas differ, so the pairing is commonly accepted after an astrologer confirms the padas.
