Questions people ask

Is marriage registration compulsory in India?

Several states make registration compulsory under their own Acts, and the Supreme Court has said marriages should be registered. Each state page here says what its own law requires.

What is the difference between registration and court marriage?

Registration records a marriage that has already been solemnised, usually under the Hindu Marriage Act. A court marriage is solemnised before a Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act, after a notice period, and is registered at the same time.

Can we apply online?

Most states now take the application online and ask both partners and the witnesses to appear once for verification. The state pages link to the official portals.

Where do I find the fee?

On the official portal of your state. Fees differ by state and by Act and change from time to time, so these pages only quote one where an official page listed it.
