Compulsory registration in Madhya Pradesh
After the Supreme Court's 2006 direction in Seema v. Ashwani Kumar, Madhya Pradesh notified compulsory marriage registration rules in January 2008, covering marriages of all persons irrespective of religion or caste. India Code also lists a Madhya Pradesh marriage registration enactment of 2008. Because the official texts are not easy to access online, confirm the provision that applies to you with the registrar's office.
As everywhere, registration is the proof of a marriage, not what makes it valid. See Hindu Marriage Act registration.
Who registers
The marriage certificate service is run by the Urban Administration and Housing Department through the urban local bodies: Nagar Nigam, Nagar Palika Parishad and Nagar Parishad offices. District websites, for example Dhar and Khargone, point applicants to the MP e-Nagarpalika portal for marriage registration and list the Nagar Palika office as the point of contact.
How to apply
The national services directory lists Madhya Pradesh's marriage certificate application as fully online, and available through:
- the MP e-Nagarpalika portal;
- e-KYC;
- Lok Sewa Kendras (LSK);
- Common Service Centres and other kiosks.
The MP e-District website gives kiosk locations, documents, timelines and fees.
Documents listed by district offices
District pages in Madhya Pradesh, such as Rewa's, describe what registrars usually ask for:
- passport-size photographs of both spouses;
- birth certificates or school mark sheets as age proof;
- the wedding card and photographs of the wedding;
- identity proof of the couple and of their parents;
- two witnesses, who appear in person;
- a certificate from the priest, where a registered priest or Arya Samaj solemnised the marriage;
- an oath or declaration where registration is delayed beyond the period the office specifies.
At the registrar's office, thumb impressions and a webcam photograph are taken. Our documents checklist has the general list.
Arya Samaj marriages
Many couples in Madhya Pradesh marry at an Arya Samaj mandir. Such a marriage between Hindus is solemnised under Hindu rites; the Arya Samaj certificate is evidence of the ceremony but is not itself a government registration certificate. Register the marriage with the municipal registrar or under the Hindu Marriage Act to get an official certificate.
Special Marriage Act in Madhya Pradesh
Inter-religion and civil marriages follow the Special Marriage Act, 1954, with notice to the Marriage Officer of the district where one partner has lived for 30 days, a 30-day objection period and three witnesses. See court marriage under the Special Marriage Act and inter-religion marriage registration.
Fees
The fee is shown on the MP e-Nagarpalika or e-District portal, or at the Lok Sewa Kendra.
Procedures, forms and fees change from time to time, so confirm the current steps on the official portal or at the registering office before you apply. This page is general information, not legal advice.
