Who registers marriages in Telangana
The Registration and Stamps Department registers marriages. Its organisation page states that the Sub-Registrar, who registers property documents, also registers marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and the Special Marriage Act, 1954, and is the Marriage Officer for the latter. District Registrars and Deputy Inspectors General are also competent to register marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, and in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts the Deputy Inspectors General handle marriage registration alongside Sub-Registrars.
Hindu Marriage Act registration
Where to apply
The marriage can be registered by the Sub-Registrar of either the place where it was solemnised, or the place where the bride or the bridegroom resides. That gives couples a choice of offices.
No time limit
The department's FAQ is clear: a marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act can be registered any time after the marriage; there is no time limit. This makes Telangana straightforward for couples registering years later; see registering a marriage after the wedding.
What to bring
The department's procedure lists:
- the online application, with the fee;
- the wedding invitation card;
- a photograph of the marriage ceremony;
- proof of residence;
- proof of date of birth, such as SSC certificates or passports;
- three witnesses.
Pre-registration for a Hindu marriage application is done online on the department's website, after which the couple and witnesses appear at the chosen office. More detail on the law: Hindu Marriage Act registration.
Special Marriage Act in Telangana
The department describes the court marriage route in these steps:
- The couple submit the notice of intended marriage online, in the form in the Second Schedule under section 5, in the jurisdiction where at least one of them has lived for at least 30 days immediately before the notice.
- The notice is published and objections may be made for 30 days.
- After that period, the Sub-Registrar, as Marriage Officer, solemnises and registers the marriage.
The department also lists the eligibility conditions: the bridegroom must have completed 21 years and the bride 18 years, neither may have a living spouse, and the two must not be within prohibited degrees of relationship. The full sequence is in our guide to court marriage under the Special Marriage Act.
Typical sequence for a Telangana couple
- Decide the law: Hindu Marriage Act if both are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist and already married by ceremony; Special Marriage Act otherwise or for a civil marriage.
- Pre-register or give notice online on the Registration and Stamps website.
- Choose the office: place of marriage or residence for the Hindu Marriage Act; district of 30 days residence for the Special Marriage Act.
- Appear with originals and three witnesses on the scheduled date.
