Marriage registrationMarriage Certificate Online: How to Apply in India
Most states now let you start a marriage registration online, but almost all still need you to appear once for verification. Here is how the online process generally works and what the certificate is used for afterwards.
Online, but not entirely
State portals have moved most of the paperwork online: the form, the uploads, the fee and the appointment. What usually remains offline is a single visit where both spouses, and the witnesses where required, appear before the registrar to sign and have documents checked. A few states have gone further. Kerala’s K-SMART platform, for example, allows video e-KYC so spouses can complete local-body registration from different places, including from abroad.
The usual online steps
- Find your state’s portal. It may belong to the Registration Department (Sub-Registrar offices), the Revenue Department, or the urban and rural local bodies. Your state’s page on the marriage registration hub names it.
- Create an account. Most portals need a mobile number for OTP; several use Aadhaar OTP or e-KYC for each spouse.
- Choose the right law. Typically: Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act (notice of intended marriage or registration of an already solemnised marriage), or the state’s own compulsory-registration law.
- Fill the form. Details of both spouses, date and place of marriage, addresses, and witnesses. Uttar Pradesh, for instance, asks for the form in both Hindi and English.
- Upload documents. Age and address proof, photographs, wedding proof and affidavits, scanned to the size the portal states. See the documents checklist.
- Pay the fee online. The fee is shown on the portal and differs by state and by how late you are registering.
- Book a slot. Pick a date for verification at the registrar’s office, where the portal offers slot booking.
- Attend verification. Bring originals and witnesses. The registrar checks the documents, takes signatures and, in many offices, a photograph or thumb impression.
- Download the certificate. Many states issue a digitally signed certificate that can be downloaded and verified online.
For a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, the online step is the notice of intended marriage; the marriage itself still takes place after the 30-day notice period. See court marriage under the Special Marriage Act.
Checking a certificate
Several portals let anyone verify a certificate by its number. Uttar Pradesh’s IGRS portal, for example, has a verification page using the certificate or application number and the date of marriage. This matters for embassies and employers who want to confirm a certificate is genuine.
Where the certificate is used
- Passport. For a surname change after marriage or adding a spouse’s name, Passport Seva accepts a marriage certificate, or a joint declaration in its prescribed format, for re-issue.
- Visas. Spouse and dependant visas almost always ask for a marriage certificate, often apostilled. See NRI marriage registration.
- Name change. Banks, employers and other offices accept it as the link between your old and new name. See name change after marriage.
- Banks and insurance. Joint accounts, nominations, insurance claims and pension or family benefits.
- Legal proof. In maintenance, inheritance or other disputes, a registered marriage is far easier to prove.
Procedures, forms and fees change from time to time, so confirm the current steps on the official portal or at the registering office before you apply. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Can I get a marriage certificate fully online without visiting any office?
In most states, no: you apply online but appear once for verification. Kerala’s K-SMART video e-KYC is an exception for local-body registration.
How do I know my marriage certificate is genuine?
Many states issue digitally signed certificates and run an online verification page where the certificate number can be checked.
Is a downloaded digitally signed certificate valid?
Where the state issues certificates digitally, the signed download is the official certificate. Check the portal for how it can be verified.
Can I correct a mistake in my marriage certificate?
States have a correction procedure through the same registrar, usually with supporting documents. Ask the registering office or check the portal.
