Marriage Registration in Gujarat: 2006 Act and UCC

Gujarat has had a compulsory marriage-registration law since 2006, run through local-body Registrars of Marriages and the eNagar portal. In 2026 the state also enacted a Uniform Civil Code with its own registration rules, to take effect from a date the government notifies.

The Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006

The Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006 (Gujarat Act 16 of 2006) extends to the whole state. It provides for the appointment of Registrars of Marriages and for the registration of marriages through a memorandum of marriage. Its definition of marriage includes re-marriage, so a second marriage after divorce or the death of a spouse is registered the same way; see our page on second marriage.

Municipal corporations act as registration offices in cities. Rajkot Municipal Corporation's memorandum form, for example, is headed Memorandum of Marriage, is addressed to the Registrar of Marriages and includes a declaration that the marriage is capable of being registered under the 2006 Act.

Applying online through eNagar

The state's eNagar portal for urban local bodies offers online marriage registration. Citizens can apply after logging in, or use the civic centres of their local body. The portal also handles marriage certificates and corrections, and sends status updates by SMS and email. A certificate verification page is available on the same portal.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation announced its own online marriage registration portal from August 2026, with document upload, status tracking and slot booking for physical verification. Check the corporation's website for whether it is live for your ward.

Typical steps

  • Log in to eNagar, or visit the civic centre or ward office.
  • Fill the memorandum of marriage with details of both spouses, the marriage and witnesses.
  • Upload documents: proof of age and address of both spouses, photographs, wedding proof such as the invitation card and ceremony photographs, and witness identity proof.
  • Pay the fee shown on the portal.
  • Attend physical verification with originals and witnesses.

The Gujarat Uniform Civil Code, 2026

The Gujarat Legislative Assembly passed a Uniform Civil Code Bill on 24 March 2026. It received the President's assent and was published in the state gazette in October 2026. It comes into force on a date the state government notifies, and its marriage-registration rules were still being finalised at the time of writing.

As reported, once in force the Code will:

  • require couples to submit a memorandum for registration within 60 days of a marriage solemnised after the Code commences;
  • provide a penalty for wilful failure to register;
  • treat marriages already registered under the 2006 Act as registered under the Code;
  • exempt Scheduled Tribes.

Until the commencement notification, registration continues under the existing system. Check the Gujarat government gazette or eNagar before your wedding.

Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act in Gujarat

Couples can also register under the Hindu Marriage Act, or marry under the Special Marriage Act before a Marriage Officer, following the national procedure. See Hindu Marriage Act registration and court marriage under the Special Marriage Act.

Procedures, forms and fees change from time to time, so confirm the current steps on the official portal or at the registering office before you apply. This page is general information, not legal advice.
