How are baby names chosen by nakshatra?

Each of the 108 padas has a traditional syllable, and the namkaran (naming ceremony) chooses a name beginning with the syllable of the child's birth pada. The pada comes from the exact time of birth.

What if the birth time is not known?

The nakshatra is usually still right from the date alone, but the pada — and so the exact syllable — may not be. Families in that position often choose from any of the star's four syllables.

Is the nakshatra name the everyday name?

Not always. Many families keep a rashi name for rituals and horoscopes and use a different everyday name. Either way is traditional.
