The five rajjus
The 27 stars are divided into five rajjus, read as the limbs of a single body. Two people in the same rajju have Rajju dosha, and this is the porutham most families check before any other.

Porutham or Guna Milan?
Whichever your family uses. The North and West Indian tradition scores Ashtakoota Guna Milan out of 36 points; the South Indian tradition judges these ten present or absent. They read overlapping material — both look at gana, yoni and the two moon signs — and weigh it very differently, so the same couple can look strong in one and ordinary in the other.
Four of the ten are counted from the bride's star to the groom's, so porutham is not symmetric and each direction has its own page. Guna Milan is symmetric and does not. This is a real difference between the systems, not a quirk of this site.

Questions people ask
What is porutham matching?
The South Indian system for matching two birth charts for marriage, used by Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayali families. Ten checks — the poruthams — are each judged present or absent, rather than scored in points the way the North Indian 36-guna Ashtakoota is.
How many poruthams should match for marriage?
Most families look for at least five or six of the ten, and treat Rajju as essential regardless of the count. A pairing with eight poruthams but Rajju dosha is usually taken to an astrologer rather than accepted.
What is Rajju dosha?
The 27 stars are divided into five rajjus, read as the limbs of one body. When both people fall in the same rajju the porutham is absent, which is Rajju dosha, and it is the single result most South Indian families will not set aside. Traditional exemptions exist and depend on the full charts.
Is porutham the same as Guna Milan?
No. Guna Milan is the North and West Indian Ashtakoota system, scored out of 36 points and symmetric between the two people. Porutham is ten present-or-absent checks, four of them counted from the bride to the groom, so the two systems can reach different conclusions about the same couple.
