Marriage registrationName Change after Marriage: Using Your Certificate
Changing your name after marriage is a choice, not a legal requirement. If you do change it, the registered marriage certificate is the document that links your old name to the new one.
You do not have to change your name
Indian law does not require anyone to change their name on marriage. Many women keep their birth name, some add the spouse’s surname, and some change it fully. Whatever you choose, aim for consistency: the same name across passport, Aadhaar, PAN and bank records avoids trouble later, especially with visas and property.
Step one: register the marriage
Most offices want proof of the marriage before they record a new surname, and the registered marriage certificate is the most widely accepted proof. If you have not registered yet, start with marriage certificate online and your state’s page on the marriage registration hub. The certificate should show your name as it was before marriage, which is what links the two names.
Surname change versus full name change
There is a practical difference between the two.
- Taking or adding your spouse’s surname. For this, the marriage certificate is usually enough. Passport Seva’s documents list for re-issue of a passport asks for a marriage certificate, or a joint declaration by both spouses in its prescribed format, for a woman changing her surname after marriage.
- Changing your first name or whole name. This is treated as a general change of name. Passport rules for a full change of name ask for proof such as a notification in the Official Gazette or advertisements in two newspapers, plus documents in the new name. Government employees are asked for a gazette notification and a departmental identity document.
Is a gazette notification needed?
A gazette notification is optional for most married women taking a spouse’s surname, because the marriage certificate already shows the link. It becomes useful or necessary when:
- you are changing more than the surname;
- your new name does not follow directly from the certificate;
- a particular office, employer or foreign authority insists on it;
- you are a government employee and your department’s rules require it.
Central gazette name-change notices are handled by the Department of Publication; some states also publish name changes in the state gazette. Check the rules of the office you are updating before paying for a notification you may not need.
Order of updates that works for most people
- Marriage certificate, ideally with a few certified copies.
- Aadhaar, because many other updates verify against it. UIDAI publishes the list of documents it accepts for a name change.
- PAN, through the income tax PAN correction service.
- Passport, by applying for re-issue with change in personal particulars.
- Bank accounts and investments, by submitting updated KYC with the certificate and new identity proof.
- Employer, insurance, provident fund, vehicle and property records, as needed.
If you are planning a wedding abroad or a spouse visa, see NRI marriage registration for apostille of the certificate.
Procedures, forms and fees change from time to time, so confirm the current steps on the official portal or at the registering office before you apply. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Is it compulsory for a woman to change her surname after marriage?
No. Name change after marriage is optional in India, and you can keep using your existing name on all documents.
Do I need a gazette notification to take my husband’s surname?
Usually not. The marriage certificate is normally enough for a surname change; a gazette notice is mainly needed for a full name change or where a specific office asks for it.
What does Passport Seva ask for a surname change after marriage?
Its re-issue documents list asks for a marriage certificate or a joint declaration by both spouses in the prescribed format. Check the Documents Advisor before applying.
Can a husband change his surname after marriage too?
Yes, but it is generally treated as a regular change of name, so expect to need a gazette notification or newspaper advertisements as well.
