When the lord of the 7th house sits in the 7th itself, it occupies its own sign and guards its own house. Classical astrology counts this among the clearest supports a marriage can have in a birth chart.
What the placement means
A planet in its own house protects that house's significations. With whole-sign houses, the 7th lord in the 7th is always in its own sign, so it has dignity by definition. The 7th is a kendra and the house of marriage, business partnerships and dealings with the public. Here its lord is at home, aspecting the lagna directly from the opposite side.
What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes the native with the 7th lord in the 7th as receiving happiness through the spouse, and as courageous, skilful and intelligent, adding a note about a tendency to vata (wind) complaints. It is one of the most positive descriptions in Parashara's chapter on the 7th lord.
Phaladeepika and Saravali both hold that a house occupied by its own lord flourishes, and later commentators apply this directly to marriage: a stable partnership, a spouse of good character, and harmony with the public. Which yogas can form
Depending on the lagna, the 7th lord in the 7th produces:
- Malavya yoga: Venus in Libra for Aries lagna, or Venus in Taurus for Scorpio lagna
- Ruchaka yoga: Mars in Scorpio for Taurus lagna, or Mars in Aries for Libra lagna
- Hamsa yoga: Jupiter in Sagittarius for Gemini lagna, or Jupiter in Pisces for Virgo lagna
- Sasa yoga: Saturn in Capricorn for Cancer lagna, or Saturn in Aquarius for Leo lagna
- Bhadra yoga: Mercury in Gemini for Sagittarius lagna, or Mercury in Virgo for Pisces lagna
For Capricorn lagna the Moon in Cancer and for Aquarius lagna the Sun in Leo are also own-sign placements, though the luminaries do not form Mahapurusha yogas.

Tradition reads a partner whose nature strongly matches the planet: a cultured, attractive Venusian partner; a bold Martian one; a learned, ethical Jupiterian one; a dutiful Saturnian one; a witty Mercurial one; a caring lunar one; a proud, radiant solar one. Meetings are often described as straightforward and public, through formal introductions, business or social life, and the native is said to take marriage seriously.
Marriage timing tendencies
A strong 7th lord in a kendra is generally read as supporting marriage when its dasha or antardasha runs, or when Jupiter transits the 7th. The exception most astrologers mention is Saturn: a Saturn 7th lord in the 7th is dignified but traditionally linked with marriage after some patience. What can still change the reading
- Retrograde 7th lord: some astrologers read a partner from the past returning, or reconsideration before commitment.
- Combustion: a 7th lord very close to the Sun may give less than its dignity promises.
- Conjunction with Rahu, Ketu or a strong malefic: the house remains protected, but tradition reads more complexity.
- Aspects: Jupiter's aspect is a further support; Saturn's adds seriousness.
Even the strongest single placement does not decide a marriage on its own. Venus, the navamsa and the dashas still matter.
