Diwali Wishes & Messages

Diwali wishes go out all week: in the family WhatsApp group on the morning of the puja, with the box of sweets to a neighbour, in the email to clients before the office closes, and under the photo of the rangoli. The good ones mention something real, the first lamp, the clean house, the card game that runs past midnight. Pick a line, change a word so it sounds like you, and send it.

Diwali wishes for friends

  • The first diya is lit, the rangoli is half done and the sweets are already missing. Happy Diwali, my friend; come over tonight.

    WhatsApp
  • Every Diwali you turn up with the loudest laugh and the smallest box of kaju katli. Never change. Happy Diwali.

    WhatsApp
  • Wishing you a house that smells of ghee and marigolds, and a card table where you finally win a hand.

    WhatsApp
  • You cleaned every shelf for this Diwali, so sit down tonight and let someone else light the diyas. Happy Diwali.

    WhatsApp
  • Here is to rangoli on the doorstep, lights on the balcony and a whole week of eating sweets before lunch.

    WhatsApp
  • Of all the lamps lit tonight, the steadiest one in my life is still this friendship. Shubh Deepavali to you.

Questions people ask

What do you write in a Diwali wish?

Light, sweetness and the year ahead, in two sentences. Open with the greeting, then add one line that belongs to the person: the rangoli they draw, the card game at their house, the sweets they always send. For a client or colleague, add a short thank-you for the year; that line is what makes it more than a forward.

Is it Happy Diwali or Shubh Deepavali?

Both are right. "Happy Diwali" is the everyday form for friends and WhatsApp. "Shubh Deepavali" means an auspicious Deepavali and reads a little more formal, so it suits elders, clients and cards; it is also the usual form in the south, where the festival is called Deepavali. In Hindi, "Diwali ki shubhkamnayein" works for everyone.
