Holi wishes go out the evening of the Holika fire and the morning of the colours, before everyone's phone goes into a plastic bag. They land in the family group, on the terrace party invite, in a quick note to the team before the long weekend, and under the photo of faces nobody can recognise. Keep them bright and a little cheeky; Holi forgives a joke.
Holi wishes for friends
Last year's pink is still on your white kurta, so wear it again and let us add this year's green. Happy Holi.
WhatsAppBring the pichkari, I will bring the gujiya, and neither of us is leaving the terrace dry. Happy Holi, friend.
WhatsAppI hope this Holi is so colourful that your neighbours recognise you only by your laugh.
WhatsAppThandai at noon, music on the terrace and a shower that takes forever. Happy Holi to you and the gang.
WhatsAppYou were the first one I coloured at school and you are still the first one I come for. Happy Holi.
WhatsAppHoli is the one day nobody minds being caught by you. Bring your worst colours; I am ready.
WhatsAppLet the Holika fire tonight take every grudge from this year, and let tomorrow's colours bring back the old jokes.
WhatsAppGreen on the face, pink in the hair and gujiya crumbs everywhere. That is the Holi I want for you.
WhatsAppThe morning after Holi, when your ears are still blue, remember who did it. Happy Holi, with love.

What do you write in a Holi wish?
Colour, sweetness and a little mischief. Open with the greeting, then one line that only fits this person: the white kurta they ruin every year, the gujiya their mother makes, the terrace where everyone gathers. For colleagues and clients, keep it bright and short, and wish them the long weekend too.
Should you send Holi wishes on Holika Dahan or on Holi?
Either works. Close family often send a line the evening before, when the Holika fire is lit. Most wishes go out early on the morning of the colours, before people head out; after noon, phones are in plastic bags and messages wait till evening. A wish the next day is fine if you say you were busy being coloured.
