A patrilineal lineage traced to an ancient rishi; most Hindu communities avoid marriage within the same gotra.
Gotra is the clan line passed from father to child, named for one of the ancient sages. Because two people of the same gotra are considered to share an ancestor, marriage within it is traditionally avoided — on the father's side almost everywhere, and on the mother's and grandmothers' sides in some communities.
It is one of the first questions in many Hindu matches and is asked directly. Most Sikh families ask about it too, though Sikh teaching does not require it.
