A Vedic birth chart: the positions of the planets at the moment and place of birth.
A kundli (janam kundli, janampatri, horoscope) maps the sky at birth — the ascendant, the moon, the sun and the other planets across the twelve houses and signs. From it come the rashi, the nakshatra, the dashas and everything an astrologer reads.
For matchmaking, the two kundlis are compared through Guna Milan or the ten poruthams, and the manglik status of each is checked. An accurate kundli needs the date, the time and the place of birth; without the time, the moon sign is usually right and the ascendant is not.
