The mandatory gift from the groom to the bride in a Muslim marriage, agreed at the nikah.
Mahr is the bride's right under Islamic law — money, gold, property or anything of value — either paid at the nikah or deferred. Its amount is agreed by the families and recorded in the marriage contract, and it belongs to the bride alone.
It is the opposite of dowry in direction and in law.
