The wedding

Shagun

An auspicious gift — money in an envelope, sweets, cloth — exchanged at each stage of a match.

Shagun is the token given at roka, sagai, the wedding and afterwards: cash in amounts ending in one (501, 1,101), dry fruit, sweets, clothes. It marks goodwill between the families rather than any transaction.

It is distinct from dowry, which is illegal in India and which no reputable platform tolerates as a condition of a match.
