Manglik and marriage: what Mangal dosha means and what families do about it

Manglik is the label most people have heard and fewest understand. It attaches to a person, not a match, and it comes from one placement in the birth chart.

What makes someone Manglik

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the ascendant — and in many traditions also from the moon and from Venus. The dosha is traditionally read as bringing heat into a marriage: conflict, accident, or worse in the old texts. The person is Manglik; the marriage is what the dosha is thought to affect.

Because it depends on the house Mars sits in, it needs the ascendant, and the ascendant needs an accurate birth time. Two people born on the same day in the same city can differ, one Manglik and one not, by a couple of hours. This is why an honest checker says "needs a full chart" when a full chart is what it needs.

Grades and cancellations

Astrologers do not treat Manglik as a single state. They grade it — high, low, anshik (partial) — by which house Mars is in and what else is there, and they list cancellations: Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter's aspect, the dosha being present in both charts, and more. A great many people labelled Manglik on a website are anshik or cancelled on a proper reading.

The two-Manglik match

The oldest practical answer: match a Manglik with a Manglik, so the doshas cancel. It is why matrimonial profiles carry the field and why families filter on it. It works as a rule of thumb and, like all rules of thumb, it needs the full charts to confirm.

Remedies

For a dosha that stands, the remedies are pujas, fasting on Tuesdays, a coral gemstone, and — the one everyone has heard of — the kumbh vivah, a symbolic first marriage to a pot, a peepal tree or an idol, so that the "first marriage" the dosha is thought to affect is not the real one. Families treat it with anything from solemnity to good humour.

What to do with the label

If you are told you are Manglik, get the full chart read by someone your family trusts, ask for the grade and the cancellations, and only then decide what it means for your search. If a match you like is Manglik, the same. The label is the start of a conversation with an astrologer, not the end of one with a person.
