Compatibility6 min readTwo careers, one marriage: relocation, working after marriage, and who moves
The questions dual-career couples in India have to answer before the wedding: whether both keep working, who relocates, what happens with children, and how to raise it without it sounding like a demand.
Two working people is now the norm among urban Indian professionals, and matrimonial conventions have not caught up. The result is a set of assumptions that go unstated until the wedding is over.
The question that must be asked out loud
Will both of you keep working, after the wedding, after a move, and after children? Ask it, get an actual answer, and make sure both families have heard the same answer.
This is the single most common unstated assumption in Indian marriages. One side assumes a career continues; the other assumes it pauses. Both are being polite. Neither is lying. The discovery comes at month eight.
Who moves
If you work in different cities, someone relocates. Decide it by comparing rather than defaulting:
- Whose role is harder to rebuild elsewhere, in that specific industry?
- Who is closer to a promotion or a qualification?
- Which city has more options for the other person if this job ends?
- Whose parents need proximity, now or in five years?
The default is that the woman moves, and in many cases it is genuinely the right answer. It is a much better marriage when it was reasoned rather than assumed, and when the person who moved was thanked rather than expected.
Long distance for a while
Plenty of couples spend a year or two in different cities. It works with a fixed end date, a rhythm of visits that is actually protected, and both families told plainly so nobody speculates. It goes badly when it is open-ended and nobody will name the moment it should end.
Children, and the honest version
Ask who steps back, for how long, and what happens to that career afterwards. In India the answer is overwhelmingly the mother, and the marriages that handle it well are the ones where that was discussed as a shared cost rather than assumed as a natural fact. Also agree what childcare you would use, because in a dual-career household the grandparents question arrives fast.
How to raise it without it sounding like a demand
Frame it as planning, in a private conversation, before the engagement: "I want us to be on the same page about work and moving, because I would rather know now than assume." Almost nobody reacts badly to that framing. Anyone who does has told you what you needed to know.
For NRI matches
Add the visa layer, which can settle it for you: a spouse may not be permitted to work at all for a period. Find out precisely what the visa allows before either of you plans around a second income, and say so on the profile rather than at meeting four.
Profession, city and relocation preference are all profile fields on TrueSaath, so two people can find out they are compatible on this before the first conversation rather than after the wedding.

Questions to ask before you say yes NRI matrimonyQuestions people ask
Should we discuss whether I will keep working after marriage?
Yes, explicitly, before the engagement, with both families aware of the answer. A large number of Indian marriages contain an unstated assumption on this, held by one side and discovered by the other after the wedding.
Who should relocate when a couple works in different cities?
Whoever loses less, decided by comparing the two careers honestly rather than by default. What matters more than the answer is that it was a decision with reasons, and that it is revisited if circumstances change.
