Fraud that uses a fake or stolen matrimonial profile to extract money — the emergency, the customs fee, the investment.
Matrimonial scams follow a script: a polished profile, quick warmth, a reason to move to WhatsApp, and then a crisis that only money can fix — a stuck shipment, a medical bill, a "gift" held at customs. Older members and NRI families are targeted most, because they are trusting and far away.
The defences are boring and effective: verification, staying on-platform until the families have met, and never sending money to someone you have not met in person.
