Avoiding matrimony scams: the script, the signs, and what actually protects you

Matrimonial fraud is a script, and once you have read the script you can see it coming from the second message. This is the script, who it is run on, and the few habits that make it fail every time.

The script

• The profile is polished: a good job abroad, a widowed or single parent, a professional photograph, an about section that says all the right things.
• The warmth comes fast. Within days you are the most important person in their life, the match their family has been waiting for.
• The move off the platform comes early — "WhatsApp is easier" — because platforms watch for what comes next and WhatsApp does not.
• The delay on video and meeting has a reason each time: travel, work, a poor connection, a sick relative.
• The emergency arrives: a shipment stuck at customs, a medical bill, a frozen account, a gift for you that needs a fee released. The amount is small at first.
• The escalation: a second emergency, larger, with the first as leverage.

Who it targets

Older members, especially widowed; NRI families, because distance explains every delay; parents searching on behalf of a son or daughter, who are trusting and unfamiliar with the platform; and anyone whose profile says they are in a hurry. The fake NRI groom — the doctor in the UK, the engineer in Canada — is the oldest version and still works because families want it to be true.

The signs that are reliable

Not the photo, which can be real and stolen. Not the job, which can be checked and still be a lie. The reliable signs are behavioural: the rush to intimacy, the rush off-platform, the reasons not to appear on video, and any request for money at all, however framed. Any two together and the conversation is over.

The five habits

• Stay on-platform until the families have met. It is the single most protective thing you can do, because everything the scam needs happens off it.
• Video-call early, and treat a refusal as an answer.
• Meet in person before any commitment — you, and then the families.
• Never send money to someone you have not met in person, for any reason, in any amount. Real families do not ask; real emergencies are handled by real relatives.
• Verify — and prefer verified profiles. A government ID matched to a live selfie is what fake profiles cannot produce.
