Marriage astrologyGana Dosha: Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa Gana Matching
Gana sorts the 27 nakshatras into three temperaments. The names sound dramatic, but rakshasa gana describes a nature, not a character flaw.
The three ganas
Gana kuta is the sixth of the eight kutas in Ashtakoota guna milan and is worth 6 points. Each nakshatra is assigned one of three ganas, or temperaments, based on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
- Deva gana (divine): Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati.
- Manushya gana (human): Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purvashadha, Uttarashadha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada.
- Rakshasa gana (fierce): Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha.
Traditionally, deva gana is read as gentle and giving, manushya gana as balanced and worldly, and rakshasa gana as strong-willed, independent and intense. Rakshasa does not mean a bad person. Many of these nakshatras are associated with courage, leadership and directness. You can look up your own nakshatra on the nakshatra page.
How the pairs score
The scoring most software uses follows a common North Indian table. It is not symmetric for every pair, because the tradition looks at whose nakshatra belongs to which gana.
- Same gana (deva with deva, manushya with manushya, rakshasa with rakshasa): 6 points.
- Groom deva, bride manushya: 6 points.
- Groom manushya, bride deva: 5 points in many tables, 6 in some.
- Deva with rakshasa, either way: 1 point in many tables, 0 in others.
- Manushya with rakshasa, either way: 0 points.
A score of 0 or 1 is what people call gana dosha. Notice that two rakshasa gana partners score the full 6, which many families find surprising. The reasoning is that two people of the same temperament understand each other. Different texts and regional schools give slightly different numbers for the mixed pairs, so do not be alarmed if two calculators disagree by a point.
The exceptions
As with nadi and bhakoot, the tradition lists conditions in which gana dosha is treated as cancelled or less important.
- Same or friendly Moon sign lords. If the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet or natural friends, many astrologers set gana dosha aside. This is the most common exception.
- Strong graha maitri and bhakoot. When the friendship kuta and the rashi kuta both score well, the gana mismatch is usually given little weight.
- Navamsa agreement. Some astrologers check the navamsa signs of both Moons and accept friendly navamsa lords as relief.
- Nakshatra distance rule. Some texts say that if the bride's nakshatra is counted far enough from the groom's, a deva-rakshasa or manushya-rakshasa pairing is acceptable. The exact count differs between sources, so this rule is applied inconsistently.
What gana actually describes
Gana is about temperament: how two people react, argue, give and take. A manushya-rakshasa pair, in the traditional reading, is one where one partner may find the other too forceful, or the other may find the first too accommodating. That is a useful prompt for a conversation, not a reason to end one. In South Indian porutham matching, the same idea appears as gana porutham, with its own rules for which combinations pass.
Gana in the full picture
Gana is 6 points out of 36. It sits alongside varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, bhakoot and nadi, and none of these kutas looks beyond the Moon. A full matching also reads the 7th house, Venus, the navamsa and the timing of both charts. Run both charts through kundli matching to see the full breakdown, then read the related pages on bhakoot dosha and nadi dosha exceptions. Unfamiliar terms are explained in the glossary.
A fair way to use it
Families who give gana weight usually do so because they want a household where temperaments fit. That is a reasonable concern, and talking openly with a prospective partner about how each of you handles disagreement will tell you more than any table. Treat the gana score as a starting question and let the conversations do the rest.

Is rakshasa gana bad for marriage?
No. Rakshasa gana describes a strong-willed, independent temperament. Two rakshasa gana partners score the full 6 points, and the tradition only flags certain mixed pairings.
Which gana pairs score zero?
In most tables, manushya with rakshasa scores 0, and deva with rakshasa scores 0 or 1 depending on the source. Same-gana pairs score 6.
Can gana dosha be cancelled?
Many astrologers set it aside when the Moon sign lords are the same or friendly, or when graha maitri and bhakoot score well. Some also use navamsa or nakshatra distance rules.
Why do two calculators give different gana scores?
Regional tables differ for some mixed pairings, especially groom manushya with bride deva, and deva with rakshasa. A difference of one point is normal.
