Marriage astrologyUpapada Lagna: How to Calculate It and What It Shows
Upapada lagna, often shortened to UL, is a Jaimini point used to read marriage and the spouse. It takes a few minutes to calculate by hand once you know the steps.
What an arudha is
In Jaimini astrology, every house has an arudha pada, a reflected point that shows how the matters of that house appear in the world, as opposed to their inner reality. The arudha of the lagna shows your image; the arudha of the 10th shows how your career is seen. The upapada lagna is the arudha of the 12th house, and it is read for marriage.
Why the 12th? The 12th house is the house of the bed, of giving and of loss of independence, and it is also the house just before the lagna. Jaimini practice treats it as the house of the spouse who comes to stand beside you. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes the upapada in its chapter on arudha padas.
How to calculate it
You need your birth chart with whole-sign houses, which is what TrueSaath's janam kundli uses.
- Step 1: find the sign on your 12th house.
- Step 2: find the lord of that sign and the sign it occupies.
- Step 3: count how many signs the lord is from the 12th house, counting the 12th itself as one.
- Step 4: count the same number of signs again, starting from the lord's sign. The sign you land on is the upapada lagna.
A worked example: for a Cancer lagna, the 12th house is Gemini, ruled by Mercury. If Mercury sits in Leo, that is the 3rd sign counting from Gemini (Gemini 1, Cancer 2, Leo 3). Count three signs from Leo (Leo 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3), and the upapada falls in Libra.
The exceptions
The Jaimini rules say an arudha cannot fall in the house itself or in the 7th from it.
- If the count lands back on the 12th house, take the 10th sign from the 12th instead.
- If it lands on the 7th from the 12th, which is the 6th house, take the 10th sign from there.
There is one more point where schools disagree. Scorpio and Aquarius each have two lords in Jaimini practice: Mars and Ketu for Scorpio, Saturn and Rahu for Aquarius. Astrologers have different rules for choosing the stronger lord, so if your 12th house is one of these signs, your upapada may differ depending on the method.
What it is read for
The upapada lagna is read for the marriage itself and the spouse as they appear in the world, including their family and status.
- The sign of the UL and planets in it describe the nature of the spouse and the relationship. Benefics there are read as a pleasant, respectable partnership.
- The lord of the UL and its condition show how well-supported the marriage is.
- The 2nd house from the UL is especially important. Jaimini practice reads it for the sustenance and continuation of the marriage. Benefics in or aspecting it are read as support; heavy malefic influence there is read as strain that needs attention.
- The 7th from the UL is read for the partner's own resources and for the family the spouse comes from.
- Venus, Jupiter and the UL: when the UL or its lord is connected to natural benefics, the tradition reads it favourably.
Some astrologers also read the upapada for a second relationship, by working out the arudha from the 8th from the 12th, but practice here varies widely and it is best left to an experienced reader.
Upapada and timing
In Jaimini chara dasha, the periods of the sign holding the UL, or of signs aspecting it by Jaimini rashi drishti, are watched as times when marriage can come up. Parashari astrologers sometimes check transits of Jupiter over the UL as a supporting signal. These are refinements, not standalone rules.
Using it alongside other factors
The upapada is a Jaimini tool, and it works best alongside the other Jaimini indicators, especially the darakaraka, and alongside the Parashari 7th house and navamsa. On its own it describes a tendency, not a story. What is the upapada lagna?
It is the arudha pada of the 12th house in Jaimini astrology. It is read for marriage and the spouse as they appear in the world.
How is the upapada calculated?
Count from the 12th house to the sign holding its lord, then count the same number of signs onward from the lord. If you land on the 12th or the 6th house, take the 10th sign from that point instead.
Why is the 2nd from the upapada important?
Jaimini practice reads the 2nd house from the upapada for the sustenance and continuation of the marriage. Benefic influence there is read as support.
Why do two astrologers give me different upapadas?
If your 12th house is Scorpio or Aquarius, schools differ on which of the two lords to use. Different rules for the exceptions can also change the result.
