Spouse in Kundli: What Your Chart Says About Your Partner

People often ask what their future spouse will be like according to their kundli. The tradition has a lot to say about tendencies, and a clear limit on what it can know.

Where astrologers look

A careful reading of the spouse never rests on one factor. Astrologers combine the following, looking for themes that repeat. Your free janam kundli shows every one of these.

The 7th house sign

The sign on the 7th house is the starting point. It is always opposite the lagna, so it describes the qualities a person meets in partnership, often ones that balance their own. Some traditional readings:

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): a partner read as energetic, proud or idealistic.
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): a partner read as practical, steady and grounded.
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): a partner read as sociable, communicative and thoughtful.
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): a partner read as emotional, intuitive and devoted.

The sign's lord adds its own nature; a Saturn-ruled 7th house reads differently from a Venus-ruled one.

The 7th lord

The lord of the 7th house and where it sits is read for the direction the spouse comes from and the shape of the relationship. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives results for the 7th lord in each of the twelve houses. For instance, the 7th lord in the 10th is read as a partner connected with one's work or public life; in the 9th, a partner from a religious or well-educated background; in the 12th, a partner connected with a distant place. The 7th lord's dignity, whether exalted, own sign, friendly or debilitated, colours the reading.

Planets in the 7th house

Planets in the 7th describe the partner and the relationship strongly. In traditional reading, Jupiter there is read as a wise, well-meaning partner; Venus as an attractive, affectionate one; Mercury as youthful and talkative; the Moon as caring and emotional; the Sun as dignified and sometimes dominant; Mars as passionate and direct; Saturn as mature, serious or older; Rahu as unconventional or from a different background; Ketu as detached or spiritual. Each is modified by sign and aspects. Mars in the 7th is also one of the placements involved in Mangal dosha.

Venus and Jupiter as karakas

Venus is the natural karaka of marriage and the spouse, read in every chart. Its sign, house, aspects and navamsa describe love, attraction and the comfort of the marriage. In classical texts, Jupiter is the karaka of the husband in a woman's chart, and many astrologers still read it that way, while others now read Venus and Jupiter for everyone.

The darakaraka

In the Jaimini system, the planet with the lowest degree is the darakaraka, the spouse significator. Its nature is read as a description of the partner. When the darakaraka agrees with the 7th house picture, astrologers give that theme more weight.

The navamsa (D9)

The navamsa chart is read as the chart of the spouse and of how the marriage matures. Its 7th house, the 7th lord, the D9 position of Venus, and the D9 lagna are all checked. Many astrologers say that a description which appears in both the birth chart and the D9 is the one to trust.

The upapada lagna

The upapada lagna, a Jaimini point, is read for the spouse as they appear to the world, including their family and standing, and for the continuity of the marriage.

What the kundli cannot tell you

This part matters as much as the rest.

  • It cannot give a name, a face or a precise description. Claims of a spouse's initial or exact height go beyond what the classical texts support.
  • It does not decide caste, community, profession or city. Some placements are read as distant or different backgrounds, but these are tendencies.
  • It cannot say whether you will be happy. A chart describes tendencies; two people's choices, respect and effort shape a marriage.
  • It cannot replace meeting the person. Family background, values and how you speak to each other are things you learn by talking.

Two charts with similar 7th houses can belong to people who marry very different partners, which is why the readings above are always phrased as tendencies.

Putting it to use

The most useful thing a spouse reading gives you is a vocabulary for what you value: steadiness, warmth, ambition, independence. When you meet someone, kundli matching compares both charts directly, and the free marriage prediction reading shows when your chart's marriage windows fall. Unfamiliar terms are in the glossary.

Questions people ask

Which house shows the spouse in a kundli?

The 7th house is the main house for the spouse. Its sign, its lord and planets in it are read together with Venus, Jupiter, the darakaraka and the navamsa.

Can the kundli tell my spouse's name or appearance?

No. Classical astrology reads tendencies of nature and background. Claims about a spouse's initial or exact looks go beyond what the texts support.

Is Jupiter or Venus the spouse karaka?

Classical texts make Venus the karaka of marriage and the wife, and Jupiter the karaka of the husband in a woman's chart. Many modern astrologers read both in every chart.

Why is the navamsa read for the spouse?

Classical texts link the D9 to the spouse and to dharma. A description that repeats in both the birth chart and the navamsa is given the most weight.
