Nadi Dosha Exceptions: When Same Nadi Is Not a Problem

Nadi carries the most points of the eight kutas, which is why a zero there worries families so much. The same tradition that set the rule also wrote down when it does not apply.

What nadi is

In Ashtakoota guna milan, the last and heaviest kuta is nadi, worth 8 of the 36 points. Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three nadis, named after the three doshas of Ayurveda.

  • Aadi (vata): Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada.
  • Madhya (pitta): Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purvashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada.
  • Antya (kapha): Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttarashadha, Shravana, Revati.

If the Moon nakshatras of the two partners fall in different nadis, the pair gets all 8 points. If they fall in the same nadi, the pair gets 0, and this is called nadi dosha. The tradition links it to health and to children, which is why it is taken seriously. You can find your own nakshatra on the nakshatra page or in your janam kundli.

The classical exceptions

Muhurta and matching texts, and the commentaries built on them, list situations in which the dosha is said not to apply, or to apply only weakly. Different texts give slightly different lists, and some astrologers accept only a few of them.

Same rashi, different nakshatra

If both Moons are in the same sign but in different nakshatras, many authorities hold that nadi dosha is cancelled. For example, one partner with the Moon in Ashwini and the other in Bharani are both in Aries, and the nakshatras differ.

Same nakshatra, different rashi

Nine nakshatras cross a sign boundary: Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttarashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada. Two people can share one of these nakshatras while their Moons sit in different signs. Most lists accept this as an exception.

Same nakshatra, different pada

Each nakshatra has four padas (quarters). Where both partners share a nakshatra but their Moons are in different padas, several traditions treat the dosha as cancelled or reduced. Some texts exclude particular nakshatras from this relief, so practice varies.

Same or friendly rashi lords

If the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet (for example Aries and Scorpio, both ruled by Mars), or are natural friends, many astrologers treat nadi dosha as cancelled or much milder. This rule is widely used in North Indian practice.

Other supporting factors

Some astrologers also give relief when the navamsa lords of the two Moons are friendly, or when the overall match is strong across the other kutas and the two full charts agree. These are judgement calls rather than fixed rules.

When it is considered most serious

Nearly every tradition agrees that the dosha is strongest when both partners share the same nakshatra and the same pada, with no other mitigating factor. That is a fairly narrow case. The broader case, two people simply in the same nadi, often falls under one of the exceptions above once you check the details.

How software scores it

Most guna milan calculators, including simple ones, give 0 for same nadi and do not apply exceptions automatically. That is why two families can see a 0 on paper and still be told by an astrologer that the dosha does not apply. When you run kundli matching, look at the actual nakshatras, padas and signs of both Moons, not just the score. In South Indian porutham matching, the comparable check is called nadi or rajju depending on the system, and the scoring works differently.

A calm reading

Nadi dosha is a classical concern, and families are entitled to take it seriously. It is also a rule with written exceptions, and those exceptions are part of the same tradition, not modern loopholes. If you have found a same-nadi match, our guide on what to do about nadi dosha walks through the next steps. Some families choose traditional observances; others decide the exceptions apply and go ahead. Either way, a full reading of both charts tells you far more than one line in a score sheet. Questions people ask

Is nadi dosha cancelled if we have the same rashi?

Many authorities hold that the same Moon sign with different nakshatras cancels nadi dosha. This is one of the most widely accepted exceptions.

What if we share the same nakshatra?

If your Moons are in the same nakshatra but different padas, or the nakshatra crosses into different signs for each of you, several traditions treat the dosha as cancelled or reduced. Same nakshatra and same pada is considered the most serious case.

Why does my matching software still show 0 for nadi?

Most calculators give 0 for same nadi and do not apply exceptions automatically. An astrologer, or a careful look at both Moons, is needed to see whether an exception applies.

Does nadi dosha mean we cannot marry?

No. It is a classical concern with written exceptions, and the tradition itself treats it as one factor among many in reading compatibility.
