Mangalsutra Meaning: Ritual, Designs and Regional Styles

The mangalsutra is a sacred necklace or thread the groom ties around the bride's neck during the wedding, worn in many traditions as the main sign of marriage.

What is a mangalsutra?

"Mangal" means auspicious and "sutra" means thread. The mangalsutra is a necklace — often black beads on a gold chain with a pendant, or a yellow thread with gold ornaments — that the groom ties or places around the bride's neck during the wedding. In South India it is known as the thali or thaali, mangalyam or mangalsutram; Kerala Christians call the small pendant the minnu.

Meaning and symbolism

The mangalsutra is widely seen as a sign of marriage and of the bond between the couple. Many traditions describe it as protecting the marriage, and it is traditionally believed to bring well-being to the husband. Black beads, where used, are traditionally said to guard against the evil eye.

Who does what

  • The priest blesses the mangalsutra, sometimes passing it among elders so they can bless it too.
  • The groom ties or clasps it around the bride's neck at the appointed moment.
  • In Tamil weddings, the groom ties the first knot of the thali and his sister ties the remaining two, while the nadaswaram and drums play loudly (the getti melam).
  • In Telugu weddings, the mangalsutram has two gold discs, one from each family, and is tied with three knots.

When it happens

In North Indian weddings, the mangalsutra is usually put on after the mangal phere, together with the sindoor daan. In many South Indian weddings, the tying of the thali — mangalyadharanam in Tamil homes or mangalya dharana in Telugu homes — is the central rite and happens at the muhurat, before the saptapadi. Once the remaining rites are complete, the family prepares for the bride's farewell, the vidaai.

Regional styles

  • Maharashtra: two small gold vatis (cups) on a chain of black beads.
  • Tamil Nadu: the thali design often identifies the family's community and lineage, and is worn on a yellow thread at first, later moved to a gold chain called the thali kodi. See the Tamil wedding guide.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: two discs, called pustelu, one each from the bride's and groom's families. See the Telugu wedding guide.
  • Kerala: Hindu brides receive a small gold thali, often leaf-shaped; Christian brides receive a minnu with a small cross, tied by the groom with threads from the manthrakodi sari. See the Malayali wedding guide.
  • Bengal: the iron bangle (loha), shankha and pola are more traditional markers than a mangalsutra, though many Bengali brides now wear one.
  • Kashmiri Pandit brides wear the dejhoor, gold ear ornaments on threads.
  • Gujarat and Rajasthan: designs often include gold and black beads, sometimes with diamonds.

Modern choices

Many women wear a slim, everyday mangalsutra after the wedding, keeping the heavier piece for occasions. Others wear it only at family functions, or choose a bracelet-style version. As with sindoor, this is a personal and family decision.

Practical tips for families today

  • Find out which design your family uses; in some communities the thali design is specific and is made to order, so allow time.
  • Ask who should provide it. Customarily it comes from the groom's family, but practices differ.
  • If a thread is used initially, plan when and how it will be moved to a chain — often a small ceremony a few months after the wedding.
  • Have a jeweller check the clasp before the day.
