How to tell whether you are ready, what to do about the ex who is still in your phone, how much to say about them, and the two patterns that reliably go wrong.
Most advice here is either "wait a year" or "get straight back out there", and neither is a rule. Two questions are more useful than any interval.
Are you looking for a person or for relief?
The rebound pattern is not about time elapsed, it is about function. If dating is a way to stop feeling something, the next person is a painkiller and will be treated as one. A rough test: is an evening alone with no plans bearable? If yes, you are probably ready. If the thought is unbearable, that is worth another few weeks.
Have you stopped narrating?
If every conversation still finds its way to what happened, you are still processing, which is fine and normal, but it belongs with friends rather than with someone new.
The ex still in your phone
Decide deliberately what you are keeping: contact, photographs, following them, the ability to see when they are online. There is no moral rule here, but "checking their profile daily and dating someone new" is a combination that goes badly for everyone involved.
If you have to see them, at work or in a shared circle, tell the new person early and plainly rather than letting them discover it.
How much to say on a date
Once, briefly, if it comes up. How long, roughly what happened, and that it is over. Two sentences. What people are actually listening for is whether you can talk about it without heat, not the details.
Two things read badly regardless of the truth: an ex described as insane, and an ending in which you had no part at all.
The two patterns that go wrong
Comparing. Measuring a new person against an old one, favourably or unfavourably, in the first month. Different people are simply different, and the comparison mostly measures familiarity.
Moving too fast. Intensity feels like connection and is often just relief. Slowing down does not risk much; you can always speed up later.
What is genuinely better this time
You know things you did not know before: what you cannot live with, what you ignored last time, and how you behave when something is wrong. Almost everyone who dates after a serious relationship reports being faster to spot a bad fit, which is the whole benefit of a painful year.
TrueSaath Dating carries what each person is looking for on the profile, so "not ready for anything serious" and "looking for something serious" do not have to collide on date three.

How long should you wait before dating after a breakup?
There is no correct interval. The useful test is whether you are looking for a person or for relief. If a quiet evening alone is bearable rather than unbearable, you are probably ready.
Should I talk about my ex on a date?
Once, briefly, if it comes up: how long it lasted and that it ended. Detail, blame and analysis all belong with friends. The person opposite you is listening for whether you have moved on, not for the story.
