Dating6 min readThe first date in India: where to go and what to actually do
Choosing a place that suits both of you, how long it should last, who pays, what to talk about, how to end it clearly, and the safety basics that cost nothing.
A first date is not an audition and it is not an interview. It is a short, low-stakes hour to find out whether talking to this person is enjoyable, which is a much smaller question than most people arrive with.
Choose the place for exit, not for impressiveness
Coffee, a walk, a bookshop, a gallery, a food street. Daytime or early evening, somewhere public, somewhere either of you can leave after an hour without a scene. Dinner locks you both in for two hours and makes silence expensive.
If either of you does not drink, do not make the first meeting about alcohol. In most Indian cities this rules out the default option and the alternatives are better anyway.
An hour is enough
Ninety minutes at most. Ending while it is still going well is the single best thing you can do for a second date. Long first dates almost always contain a dead stretch that both people remember afterwards.
What to talk about
The same principle as anywhere: ordinary life beats credentials. What their week actually contains, what they do on a Sunday, where they grew up and what it was like, the last thing they got properly interested in. Follow up on their answers rather than moving to your next question.
What to leave out of hour one: exes in detail, salary, marriage timelines, and anything that sounds like screening. If marriage intent matters to you, and in India it usually does, there is a way to raise it that is not an interrogation, covered below.
Who pays
Offer. If they want to split, split, without a performance. Whoever chose the place can reasonably offer first. The people who report the worst first dates almost always describe a five-minute standoff at the counter.
Safety, briefly
Meet there and leave yourself rather than being picked up. Tell one friend where you are and when you expect to be done. Keep your drink with you. If something feels wrong, leave, and do not owe anyone the rest of the evening. None of this is rude and all of it is normal.
Ending it clearly
If you would like to see them again, say so before you part, plainly: "I enjoyed this, I would like to do it again." Waiting three days to signal interest is a game that mostly loses matches.
If you would not, do not promise a second date to be polite. A short message the next day is kinder and takes ten seconds: "It was good to meet you, but I do not think we are a match. All the best."
Second dates
Do something rather than sit opposite each other again. People are more themselves walking, cooking, driving, or doing anything with a task in it, and you will learn more in the second hour than the first.
On TrueSaath Dating, crossed paths surfaces people who share your neighbourhoods, so a first meeting is usually somewhere you both already go.

How long should a first date last?
About an hour to ninety minutes. Long enough to get past nerves, short enough that neither of you is trapped if it is not working. Coffee or a walk beats dinner for exactly this reason.
Who pays on a first date in India?
Offer, expect it to be split, and do not make it a debate. Whoever suggested the place can offer first. Insisting after one refusal turns a small courtesy into an awkward moment.
