Having the "what are we" conversation

When to ask, how to phrase it so it is not an ultimatum, what a vague answer means, and why this conversation matters more in India than in the advice written elsewhere.

The conversation everyone dreads and almost everyone eventually has. It goes badly mostly because of when and how it is raised, not because of what is asked.

When to have it

Not on date three, and not after a year. The practical trigger is the moment you are about to make a decision based on an assumption: turning down someone else, telling a friend, changing a plan, introducing them to family, or spending money on a trip. If you cannot say what you are to each other and you are about to do one of those, it is time.

How to phrase it

Say what you want rather than asking what they want. Asking first invites them to guess your answer and match it.

"I like this and I would like it to be exclusive and going somewhere. I wanted to say that rather than assume it. Where are you?"

Two sentences, no ultimatum, no accusation, and it gives them somewhere to stand. Do it in person, sober, not at the end of a night out, and not over text if you can help it.

Reading the answer

  • A clear yes is a clear yes. Believe it.
  • A clear no, kindly given, is information you needed, and it is not a rejection of your worth.
  • "Let us not label it" is an answer. It means not now, and possibly not with you. It can be accepted honestly, once, with a time limit of your own choosing.
  • Deflection twice is a no that someone is hoping you will not force them to say.

The mistake is asking again in a month with the same result, and again in three months. One conversation, one honest answer, then a decision on your side.

The Indian version of this conversation

Elsewhere this is about exclusivity. Here it usually also means: are we heading towards marriage, and are you willing to face your family about me. Those are two separate questions and both matter.

Someone can be genuinely committed and genuinely unable to face their parents yet. That is not dishonesty, but it is a fact you should have rather than discover in year three. Ask it directly and kindly: "If this keeps going, do you see yourself telling your family about me?" The answer, and the speed of it, tells you a great deal.

If you want different things

It is better to know. Two people wanting different things is not a failure of either, and the kind version is to say so and stop, rather than continuing while hoping the other person changes. Nobody in the history of relationships has been talked into wanting marriage.

TrueSaath Dating carries what each person is looking for on the profile, so this conversation starts from something rather than from nothing.

Questions people ask

When should you define the relationship?

When you want to know, and at the latest when you are about to make a decision based on an assumption. Most people find that six to ten weeks of regular meeting is the point at which not knowing starts to cost something.

What does it mean if they avoid the conversation?

Usually that the honest answer is one they think you will not like. A single deflection can be nerves. A second is an answer, and treating it as one saves months.
